July 1, 2015 - Columbia, MO

Rain, Rain, go away. Come again some other day.  Very gloomy!

Edith was the last one up at 7:30 am.  Erwin prepared bacon and coconut pancakes for breakfast. The aroma of bacon filled up the living/dining room.

On our way to downtown Columbia, we stopped by Cummins Quick Service shop to inquire if they can check and fix the broken bolt and to replace the air filter in our Lil’ Home (LH).  They said for us to bring the LH in sometimes today and they can look into it and see if they can fix it or not.

We drove through Columbia, went by University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College.  In downtown there are parking meters everywhere and when students are back to school after summer break it is almost impossible to find a spot to park to go shopping or dine out.

We spent the morning visiting with Erwin’s great nieces, Vida and Josie.  They both are talented artists like their mother Ruby (Erwin’s niece).  Josie showed us some of her art work and we were impressed with them.  Vida is not drawing much like she used to.  She says people are too critical of her portraits that she does of them and want her to make them look pretty, etc etc. so she stopped doing drawings.  We spent about two hours visiting with them. Josie is expecting her first baby, a boy, in August and Vida will be studying for her Masters this fall.

We went back to Cottonwood RV Park to pick the LH, left the Jeep behind, went to Cummins Quick Service shop on 763.  We waited for like 45 minutes before two mechanics came to look at the bolt.  They do not have it on hand and would need to  contact Newmar RV Headquarters to get more information on parts needed to replace the broken part and to get the correct # for air filter.  They said they will call us when the parts come in, so we went back to the RV park.

After setting up the LH we fixed lunch.  Because we had to wait for the shop to call and tell us to come we thought we should stay and rest and not go anywhere for rest of the afternoon.

The service shop called to inform us that the parts will be shipped via priority express and should arrive tomorrow. They told us to bring the LH before 10:30 am.

After supper we went out for ice cream treat at Sparky’s in downtown Columbia. It was so hard to find a parking space, so Edith dropped Erwin off and drove around few blocks 2 times before Erwin came out of the store holding 2 cups of delicious ice cream. Erwin got the same flavor he had the day before - Apricot Cherry Pie and Edith got Upside down Pineapple cake flavor.

Before heading to visit with Erwin’s niece, Ruby, we stopped at MPC to get gas fill-up for the Jeep.

The clouds started to look dark and the sun disappeared behind them.  Edith told Erwin that we are going to get heavy rain tonight.

Ruby was outside waiting for us. The last time we saw her was 12 years ago. She still looked great. While we three were chatting Ruby received text message from her friend notifying her about severe weather alert, so she checked the local weather.  Tornado watch is in effect and the tornado siren went off.  You should see Edith’s widening eyes (she did not want to admit, but she was a bit scared).  Ruby explained that the sound of the coming tornado is like the sound of oncoming freight train and she has not heard the sound yet.  Ruby asked us if we want to go downstairs for shelter to be safe.  Erwin thought we will be fine where we are, so we stayed put.

The colors of the clouds changed. It was not green, (it is usually that color when tornadoes appear), but different shades. The clouds moved very swiftly.  Then came heavy downpour followed by lightning and thunder. It lasted for about 45 minutes. The tornado siren stopped.  We waited until the rain dissipated before we left.

When we got home it was drizzling and there were lots of puddles all over the campground.

Feeling relieved that everything is ok and we are home safe we played Mexican train game and Edith won 3-2.

In spite of the tornado scare we have to say that our day was lovely and relaxing.
