June 21, 2014 (61st Day)

Sun was up before 5:30, so Edith hurriedly got dressed and went out with her camera. However, the sunrise was not that spectacular, but the sunshine on the mountains was pretty.

She went back to the van, woke Erwin up.  After breakfast we went biking toward the townsite.  Water level was lower than yesterday, but still over some roads and sidewalks.

When we were done browsing stores we biked back to the campground. After checking out of the campground we went to see Cameron Falls. There was this cute chipmunk that would pose with hopes of getting nuts from passerby's.  There were posted signs that there was going to be a wedding at the falls.

Cameron Falls

We wanted to go back to the Prince of Wales Hotel, so Edith can get more pictures of foxes.  However, the management posted signs around the yard warning not to get too close to the den.  Apparently, they did not like what they saw yesterday when there was a large group of photographers getting too close to the den. We waited a good while for foxes to come out, but it did not happen.  :-(  We were glad we got the pictures the previous day.

We went inside the hotel to see what it was like.  The interior was beautiful and where the dining area is, there was a full wall of windows with a view of the mountains and the green/blue lake.  We walked to the back of the hotel to get a view of the beautiful lake.  Because the hotel is situated on top of the mountains the winds are very strong, blowing constantly. It was hard for Edith to hold her camera steadily to take pictures.  We went back to check on the fox den, but still no activity.

Way back near the end of the lake is the boundary between the US and Canada.

The Majestic Prince of Wales Hotel

It was time for us to get back on the road. We left Waterton at 10:45 am.  We went on Bison Padlock Loop road which is fenced. The road was narrow and very bumpy. We saw only one bison in the whole area. It took about 15-20 minutes to complete the loop. There was a sign telling us not to get out of the vehicle while inside the area.

Selfies!

On 6 near Twin Butte there were 3 old wagons

Scenic overlook - gorgeous view of the mountains. Good place to get out of the van and stretch our legs.

Nice pond reflection of mountains at farmland in Twin Butte

Pleasant drive on AB-6, beautiful green pastures, farmlands

Don't this bull look like he has been pumping iron?
Wind turbines and great view of the mountains on AB-6

Arrived Pincher Creek, AB at 12:30 pm. Shopped at Sobey's grocery store. Drove through downtown and there were several wall murals. This is just two of many.

Got on AB-3 from AB-6. Again, more and more wind turbines out on the farmland.

Saw 5 eagles. They were fighting over a female eagle.  We pulled over to a roadside and took photographs using zoom lens. We stayed to watch a while because we were hoping to see the ritual, but nothing really happened.

Edith saw a sign advertising Bar U Ranch, the only National Historic ranch site that has many historic buildings and structures. She mentioned to Erwin that she would like to check it out, so we went by.  However, the parking lot was pretty much filled up and we found out there was a wedding going on. Because we got there little late the last tour was at 5 pm and Erwin was not up to visiting the ranch. Edith wanted to, but suggested that we go find a campground nearby and we could come visit the ranch first thing in the morning.  We took a look around inside the gift shop, bought a jar of apple butter BBQ sauce. After leaving the building we took a side trip to get a better view of the ranch.  The wedding procession had just begun.  There were Percherons in the stall.

We continued on Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) until we got to Longview, AB. We checked into Tales and Trails campground and the site fee was $20 with no hook ups. Edith started to feel tired and decided to take a short nap, but slept for more than 2 hours.  Erwin warmed up leftovers in the microwave using the generator for power, which was really noisy, but it did not wake Edith up. She must have been dead tired.  When she was up she fixed taboulee for her late supper, then went out to take pictures of the sunset.

Good Night Y'all!
