July 9, 2014 (79th Day)

Another crispy morning!

Edith walked over to Johnson store near the campground to use its wifi to edit Day 25 trip blog and got it published. Across the street from the campground we stayed at has some old buildings and a gazebo, so we went over to check them out.  Port Wing, WI is a very very tiny town. You can miss it blinking your eye!

On 13 toward Bayfield, WI there was a detour sign posted that a bridge is out and to use County Hwy C route. Because of the detour we missed part of the scenic route between Cornucopia and Bayfield. A good reason to come visit it another time

Unusual name for a store!
It's hard to believe anyone would be raising mosquitos like these folks!

We finally arrived Bayfield, WI, the town well known for cruises to see Apostle Islands. It offers so much things to see/do in this town.  Our first stop, of course, was to check for information at visitor's center.  After getting what we needed to know, we walked around the town, stopped by the ticket office to sign up to go on Apostle Islands cruise.  We wanted to go soon after we signed up, but the next available cruise was in the mid afternoon and it was around 11 am. This would mean more free time for us to kill until 3 pm.

Since it was almost lunch time we wanted to try Greunke's, a very unique and eclectic place that has all walls covered with memorabilia and pictures of celebrities.

Famous strawberry shortcake

We still had two more hours to kill before the cruise, so we went out for a drive to countryside.

When we picked up cruise tickets the attendant told us to follow the yellow line on the dock and wait for the captain to call us in.  Well, we followed the yellow line (not the yellow brick road in Wizard of Oz) on the dock, but we did not realize that we followed the wrong one.  Where we stood there was nobody else but just two of us and we were puzzled that there was a line of ticket holders across from us.  It turned out that we were in the wrong place, but were there first before everybody else showed up.  Ok, the attendant called us over to the right spot, which meant we were put in front of everybody else.  Little did we know that there was a prize for the first guests and we received a complimentary book on Apostle Islands (worth $8.99). Now we wondered how people behind us felt when they could have gotten the book if we were not put in front of them from the wrong spot!

The cruise was a 3 hour long with no stops.  We did see a black bear on one of the islands we passed by but failed to get a picture of him. :-(  Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has 21 islands in Lake Superior. Our favorite one was Devil's Island because there were lots of sea caves. We saw two lighthouses.

Edith said if we come to visit Bayfield and Apostle Islands again she would want to sign up for the sea cave kayak trip because it would allow you to get so close to the caves.

Few miles north of Bayfield is a campground called Legendary Waters Resort & Casino's Buffalo Bay Campground. A short walk to the casino which provides showers and rest rooms for campers.  Nice view of Lake Superior. The night was quiet..
