July 20, 2014 (90th Day)

Very cloudy, no skybreak when we were up at 6:20 am

Never seen a sign worded like this before!
In the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere, there stands this Metal Scarecrow. scaring what?

Got on Highway 7 then turned right to 50 to check out Healey Falls, but we missed the turn and arrived Trent Canal Lock #14. Doug, the lock master, was there and we talked for a bit. He explained that the drop here is 25 feet as compared to Ashburnham Lock #20, the one we visited yesterday, which is a 12 foot drop. We asked him where we can find Healey Falls and he said we missed it by 2 1/2 miles. On our way back to the van Erwin saw something moving on the ground and called Edith over to take pictures of the beautiful killdeer guarding her 4 eggs.  We did not see it when we walked by the first time

She blended in perfectly!
Look at how small the bird is!

Back on 50 going north to see Healey Falls. The road down to the bottom was filled with loose gravel and was narrow, but we made it down alright. The falls were not overflowing with lots of water, but nice cascade, though.

Back on 50 S to check out Ramney Gorge suspension bridge in Campbellford, ON. The suspension bridge is between a ravine, has a mesh wire walking surface and the water is below it. It is a 300 ft long and is about 30 ft above the water.  We walked from one end to another and made some bounces.

Went to Ranney Falls and Locks #11 & 12. Watched the boat lift operation.

While in the same town there is a giant $2 Canadian coin display at Old Mill Park, not far from visitor's center. It is 27 feet tall and 18 ft diameter and was built in 2001. It was designed by a local artist named Brent Townsend.

So far, the weather was holding up, but no sky breaks in sight.

On way back to the van we stopped by to chat with a lady who was stepping out of a yacht. She was from Quebec and we talked a while. She gave us tips on what to see while in Quebec after she found out that we were going there soon.  Her husband had just retired few months ago and they had been traveling by yacht for 3 months.

While on our way to visit a famous chocolate factory in Campellford, ON we saw several BLACK squirrels at one residence on Second Street and Doxsee Ave. At one time we saw 7 of them.

We went inside the World's Finest Factory Outlet store, bought candies and nuts

Our purchases!

We had lunch at Capers that is in a 1890 heritage home. Erwin had beef short rib mac/cheese and Edith got buffalo blue cheese chicken wings.  Excellent lunch!  Edith said she would order the wings again, but admitted it was messy!

Thumbs up for this place!

Back on 30 South to go to Pesqu'ile Point Park to see the lighthouse. Near the lighthouse is a campground, so we reserved a site for $45.20 Canadian dollars.  There is a gift shop and gallery at the lighthouse area. After settling down at the campground we went over to see the lighthouse.  There was an interpretive walk with the guide telling stories as we moved along.  The lighthouse is 64 feet tall and 23 feet wide at the base.  It took 8 years to complete the lighthouse. After the tour was over we went rock combing along the shore.

Erwin looking for pretty rocks!
We went back to the campground and Edith fixed vegetable stir-fry over jasmine rice.  While Edith was putting coconut oil jar back in the drawer she twisted her back and it was painful.  After supper she decided to take a nap, but ended up sleeping all night long.  While she was sleeping Erwin went out for a walk on the beach at Lake Ontario.  On his way back using shortcut he encountered a very unfriendly female camper who yelled at him for trespassing on her site.  Upset by her behavior he told her that it was his first time meeting a very unfriendly camper and walked away.  He read a book for a while before retiring for the night.

Erwin's version: Previewing this, It irritated me about that lady's behavior! I have been camping for many years and this was the very first negative reaction I ever had from a camper, usually they are friendly, polite and talkative and mostly willing to exchange information(s).  I hope we never run into her or someone like her again!
