July 4, 2014 (74th Day) - Happy 4th of July!

Partly sunny 66˚ Woke up at 8, we were too lazy to jump out of the bed immediately.

We finally left the park to get on 281 to go to Fort Totten historic site, but when we got there we found out it was closed because of the holiday.  Oh well.. We continued down to Spirit Lake Casino and Resort to get gas fill-up.

We then visited Devil's Lake, took pictures of flying geese sculptures, fireman statue and Malso grain elevator.

Grain Elevator

Traveled on 2 toward Grand Forks, ND

Stopped in Lakatoa to take a picture of a water tower.  While enroute to the main road we went past the forestation and saw this beer keg on cable. Edith had no idea what it was for until Erwin explained about the game played by firemen. How is it played?

This is a skill building practice/game that firemen use to build their hosing skill by having 2 teams trying to push the keg to the other end. they use water pressure to move the keg to one side or the other. Since the keg is suspended about 12 feet up in the air,  all participants and nearby spectators are guaranteed to get wet!

Stopped in Michigan (not the state, but name of the town), ND to see the historic site that has a monument explaining about 1945 train crash that killed 35 people. It was North Dakota's worst rail disaster. It happened at 7:20 pm on August 9, 1945 when the passenger train was plowed into by the freight train behind after it made an emergency stop.

On way to Crookston, MN we checked out several roadside attractions

In Crookston there was one roadside attraction that Edith wanted to get a picture of a large cart, ox and man.  After taking pictures Edith walked back to the van, stepped on a tiny rock and fell in front of the van. Erwin did not see her fall, but the lady in a passing car saw it happen, stopped and got out of the car, motioned to Erwin. He did not realize that Edith fell. Immediately, the police car came and the officer called in an ambulance.  The police quickly put the oxygen mask on Edith because she started to hyperventilate.  She landed half on the asphalt and half on the ground.  She was hurt on the right side of her body. After 10 minutes of being on the ground she finally got up, but was feeling sore. She had landed on her right elbow and hit her crazy bone sending funny feelings all the way to her fingers!  The police and paramedics would not let Erwin pick her up.  Erwin found the tiny rock that caused Edith's fall. We appreciated their attention, quick response to the scene. They were very friendly.

Edith and her Hero!
This is the tiny culprit that caused Edith's fall

After letting Edith rest a bit we drove over to Hugo's grocery store to pick up groceries. Edith was limping and her right shoulder was bothering her, but she was not letting them stop her from getting around.

We found a cheap campground in Fosston, MN for $16 a nite, but there was no office and we could not find bathroom/shower and hookups, so stopped by the fire department  but no one was around to answering Erwin's call.  After looking around for a bit, Erwin found the electric hookup site for the camper van and said there was a bathroom in the maintenance building.

We walked to the fire station that is right across from the campground and inquired about July 4th fireworks.  Not in this town, they said.  We would have to drive 20 miles to the next town to watch it.. Forget it, we said.

Took pics of sunset and clouds with nice beam of rays. Soon after we got inside the van the downpour began with lots of lightnings.  Almost blinded by one. So, in a sense, there were fireworks going on in the sky for 4th of July!
