June 25, 2014 (65th Day)

Edith woke up first and checked the weather, was disappointed to see that it was very dreary and wet. This meant it would not a great time to take pictures at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.  Erwin was up at 7:30 am.  After getting dressed and checking to be sure all doors/drawers are locked we left the parking area to go visit Lake Louise. We wanted to get to Lake Louis parking lot before it gets filled up later on in the morning.

Went to the first parking area and there were not many vehicles. Erwin decided not to go see Lake Louise because his left knee was bothering him (from the hike in the rain with the bears around the day before), so Edith packed up her camera bag and went alone. What a nice view, but it would have been far better on a sunny day. She went to the canoe rental station and asked if she could go on their dock to take pictures of canoes and the mountains. They told her that she cannot go on the premises. After "arguing" a bit she gave up and went to look for a good spot. Ah, she found a "not so perfect but better than nothing"! After shooting she was tempted to take a walk around the loop, but then decided not to because it was very cold and damp. Erwin was all alone in the van reading a book.  Also, she would rather have Erwin come along. Instead, she went inside the hotel and was impressed. went back out on the walkway to take pictures of the duck on the pond and a songbird was hopping nearby. She went back to the van and persuaded Erwin to take a short hike to see the lake.  He was equally impressed with the view.

Pretty Songbird

Unusual chandelier (wonder if the ladies' arms ever get tired?)

Nice view of Lake Louise from the dining room
Selfies!

On way to Moraine Lake, it started to get foggy as we climbed up to 6,000 ft elevation.  Even though it was foggy all around the view was so gorgeous!

Edith wanted to bring the tripod along and looked for a perfect spot to set it up. While doing that a friendly ground chipmunk climbed up on the rock and "posed" for pictures.  Other tourists joined in to take picture of this cute creature! Edith wished she could pet it...  We could easily stay here and stare at this place for several hours. When you first approach the area you will see the log jammed area.  The Valley of the Ten Peaks is in the back of the blue/green lake. There is a canoe and kayak rental store nearby.  There is a gift shop and concession.  Because Erwin's knee was still bothering he went back to the van letting Edith enjoy the view some more. There are several glacier fed lakes in Banff area and Moraine Lake is one of them, hence the emerald colored lake. People will not believe if we told them about the lake color, they will have to come here and see for themselves.  After Edith was satisfied with what pictures she got she stopped by the concession and got herself a cup of hot chocolate to go.

Partridge or ???

Leaving Moraine Lake we went back to Lake Louise to get gas and to have our propane tank refilled at Petro-Canada across from the shopping center where we dry camped the night before. As we were about to leave Lake Louise there was a sign for Lake Louise Rail Station and Cafe, so we went that a way to check it out.  Very old railroad station with lots of rail artifacts and pictures.  There is a nice restaurant.  The train was getting ready to go.

Got on Trans-Canada Highway (1),  then 93 toward Jasper.

First stop was at Crowfoot Glacier. Lots of glaciers

Next stop at Bow Lake and saw Bow Glacier.

Looking for wildlife!

Turned left to visit Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, and it has an awesome view of Bow Lake and the mountains.  Edith got herself another hot chocolate ($2.50 CD). There were lots of motorcyclists hanging around at the lodge.

Edith hiked 300 meters down to see Mistaya Canyon and waterfall.

At N 51.01889 deg and W116.83921 Erwin pulled off to an area that has lots or rocks and gravels. Definitely not a good place to stop for picture taking, Edith thought to herself.  It turned out that Erwin wanted to build rock cairn. He was mighty proud of his work!

Stopped at Weeping Wall overlook. The waterfall is fed by a spring on top of the mountain that keeps on flowing all year round. We can imagine how beautiful they are when winter comes and the falls are frozen.

On top of a curved road jaw-dropping scenery of North Saskatchewan River and Cirrus Mountain

A little souvenir!

We entered Jasper National Park at 5:40 pm. We were tired and hungry, so we started  for campgrounds. We wanted to check out Wilcox Provincial Campground ($15.70 CD), surveyed which site to reserve. We liked site #17 because of the mountain view.  Went back to self-registration station and filled out the form.

Edith served cheese tortellini and taboulee for supper.  Erwin left a plastic bag of pita flatbreads on the picnic table, went back inside to bring more foods, came out to find that the raven had torn the plastic bag, took a half piece of flatbread and flew away.

While Erwin was favoring his left knee and did not want to do any more walking Edith went out for a walk around the campground a short time to take pictures of the mountains.

Ray, A drop of golden sun!

A Bookworm!

Even though we were not really tired, we forced ourselves to hit the sack at 9 because we have so much to see/do on way to Jasper the next day.  The night was still bright and it did not become dark until after midnight.
