July 1, 2014 (71st Day) - Happy Canada's Day

We finally got a sunny day and it was 59˚

Today was Happy Canada's Day.

There was no shower facility in the camp area we stayed at, so we had to drive to another camp area to take a shower.

Elk Island Visitor's Center was not open when we got there around 8:45 am, and we had already seen most of the places inside the park.

We continued driving on Yellowhead Highway E/AB-16 toward Ukraine Cultural Heritage Village.

Brief Fact on Ukraine Village: It is now a provincial historic site displaying Ukraine settlement that  was active between 1892 and 1930.  It was once a very thriving Ukraine settlement in Alberta. It is about 30 minutes east of Edmonton, Alberta. There are at least 20 historic buildings and three churches. Visitors will interact with customed role players who re-enact the routines and actives that real-life Ukraine pioneers experienced.

We knew the entrance is not open until 10 am, but we got there before that.  There was an attendant inside the building telling us to go ahead and park and wait until the opening time, which we did.

The village was very interesting.  Almost every house we went in there would be a smell of borscht being cooked for lunch. After we were done exploring we went over to the big red barn where lunch was being served. We were hoping to order borscht, but they were already out of it.  So, we settled on Heritage plate ( 4 perogies, 2 stuffed cabbage rolls, sausage and cuke salad) $11 CD. Very very delicious, but we really wanted to try borscht.  Oh well, next time... By the time we got back to the van and checked the clock we realized that we spent 3 hours at the village. Worth every penny of the admission fee!

Information on borscht: It is a soup made primarily of beets and other vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, served hot or cold

Our lunch

We swung by Vegreville, AB to see the majestic Pysanka that was built as a monument to honor the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and its long history of bringing peace and security to the area.  There was live music going on.

Went into Mannville town, but it was so dead.  The telephone museum was closed. Saw old barn and buildings. Back to 16

We spent a little while visiting Vermillion, but the town was very quiet because of the holiday. We were in mood for root beer floats, so we went by the local A&W.

Continued on Yellowhead Highway E/AB-16 to Lloydminister. As soon as we arrived it started to rain heavily. We were out of milk and Erwin wanted to have it for his breakfast the next morning, so we went to Sobey's to get it.

Arrived Saskatchewan border at 6:35 pm. It was still raining heavily.

Along the highway the road and shoulders were without litter. Very clean! We were impressed!

We finally arrived North Battleford, saw Walmart, was planning to dry camp there. Because we needed wifi we went to Tim Horton's that was in front of Walmart.  While there Erwin received a call from Edith's brother to let us know about Edith's momma's condition. He wanted Edith to check email that he sent to her.  It was a difficult time for us to think about momma's condition when we were so far far away from home.

While we were checking email and drinking coffee we met a deaf lady named Debbie who lives in North Battleford.  We chatted for a bit and she shared information about fireworks being planned at 10:45 pm at King Hill area.  Edith was anxious to go see fireworks, but Erwin was very tired from all the driving, so we did not go watch it.

We went back to Walmart, but changed our mind and decided to dry camp at Mark's store area right across from Walmart mainly because Walmart's parking lot was not level.

Quiet night and we needed it.
