We decided we were going back to sightsee Marquette before checking out of the town. For breakfast we stopped at Huron Bakery to get some donuts. Yummies!
We went back to Presque Isle Breakwater Lighthouse. It was very windy and cool, but we braved ourselves to walk on the breakwater to get a close look of the lighthouse, but by the time we got to halfway point, the rest was rocky and Edith did not want to continue further. Erwin took Edith's camera and went ahead on the rocks to get close to the lighthouse and took pictures then return.. Brave soul.. While Erwin was going toward the lighthouse a guy came up and talked to Edith asking her who the person is way over there. "Her husband", she replied and asked if he would go over the rocks, "No No, that's too dangerous", he said and shook his head while watching Erwin skipping/hopping over the rocks, turning around and walking back to his car. (with his tail tucked between his legs!)
Had to rebuild the cairn as either wind, waves or someone knocked down the cairn he built yesterday. |
After seeing so many billboards advertising Jilbert's ice cream we decided to go to the plant to check it out. Jilbert's Dairy has been making ice cream for over 70 years. The milk they used for ice cream comes from local cows on local farms. The store was not open when we arrived and it would mean waiting for an hour and half, but we did not stay. There were 4 cow statues, but there was supposed to be 5th one, but we could not find it.
Walked to Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, but the tour was not available til 4 pm and we were there at 11 am. Forget it, so we walked on the grounds taking pictures.
Hey Edith, can you see the lighthouse through the periscope? |
After checking off attractions we wanted to visit in Marquette we got on Route 41 then Route 28 to visit Christmas, MI.
Then scenic overlook near Munising, took picture of a lighthouse on Grand Island East End
The store owner's dog (Edith could not walk away without taking a picture of it) Look at the expression! |
Entered Munising, MI looking for lighthouses and waterfalls. We pulled into the parking lot to get a close-up look of Munising Range Lighthouse that is just off the road.
After getting gas near Pictured Rocks Cruises we decided that we wanted to go visit Pictured Rocks, got on computer to check for tickets. ALL SOLD OUT for today and tomorrow. Ahhh!!! We did not think to check and buy tickets ahead of time. Since we were dillydallying along the meandering road we decided not to stay another day to get tickets for the next 2 days we immediately left for St. Ignace, MI.
On 28 after Munising there is nothing exciting to see. Lots of trees, good road yeah. Not exactly boring... Then we turned right on 177 and there were signs for Amish farmlands but we did not see houses, so they may be way in the back of the area.
Left on US 2, saw Lake Michigan for the first time. Stopped at rest area, took a short walk to the "beach". Where we stood is the northernmost point of Lake Michigan. The water was oh so blue.
