May 13, 2018 - Scenic 12 Byway

Happy Mother’s Day

I was up early and almost missed the sunrise. It was very cold. The Weather Live app warned of freezing temperatures this morning.
There were light flurries as we got ready to head out for our day’s trip on Scenic Byway 12.  A medium sized cooler had lunches, snacks, drinks, nuts and fruits that will lay though the day.

We left Hatch at 8 sharp and drove on Highway 89 until we turned right to get on the Scenic 12 Byway.
Back view of Bryce Canyon
It warmed up as we got to Tropic, UT. While in that town we got gas fill up before continuing the trip, since the route we are taking will be a long trip. After leaving the gas station I made a side trip to check out the cemetery.

A visit to Kodachrome Basin State Park was the highlight of our trip.  $8 per vehicle good for up to 8 passengers.  There are several towering sandstone chimneys.  There are as close to 70 monolithic spires that range from 6’ to 170’ in height.
Erwin is dwarfed by this rock!
There are few trail heads, but we did not go on any of them, although we were tempted to when we pulled into Sentinel Trail. The trail head is a 1.7 mile loop that allows hikers to get a view of Shakespeare Arch and the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. My legs were still stiff and sore from climbing down/ up at Lower A lot Canyons last Thursday, so I was not up to go for a walk.  Erwin’s right knee was still bothering and he did not want to take a chance of aggravating the pain.

After leaving the State Park and getting back on the Byway We stopped at few scenic overlooks, and checked into Escalante Interagency Visitor Center. The ranger gave us tips on where to go for best views, but driving on a gravel road for 57 miles one way would not work for us.
It was surprisingly comfortable
This is the rough work of the chair
I’ll have to say that the Scenic Byway 12 is one of the beautiful byways in America. It may not be the best, but it was worth every mile and our time. Our friends from Texas, Marilyn and Roger, were the ones who suggested the Byway.

Butch Cassidy's boyhood home
It was already 5 pm after we reached Torrey, UT, and I knew that I’ll be too tired to cook supper when we get home around 7 pm.  We decided to dine out in Panguitch, UT.  Their strawberry rhubarb pie was to die for!
We did not get back to the campground til after 8 pm.  We were very exhausted 💤
