July 2, 2017 - Palmer, AK

It rained during the night. The forecast called for 95% chance of rain today. I had a couple of places to visit today, but I guess few of them will be on hold until another time.  Erwin and I were thinking of coming back here after the caravan trip is over.

Before we set out to explore we attended Pancake Breakfast that were hosted by Steve/Karen and Gary/Wanda.

We went out on our own to explore the town of Palmer and the cemetery.  The rain had stopped while we were out and about.

Palmer Pioneer Cemetery is a historic cemetery outside of Palmer, AK. It is within Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

We lucked out when there was a car show, checked out antique automobiles.

The guy used a screwdriver to hold the hinge in place.
Smart idea, eh?

Afterwards, we went out for dinner at Palmer City Alehouse.  It was highly recommended by the tour guide we went on a tour yesterday.  We had pepperoni calzone, split in half.  It was very good, had plenty of pepperoni and cheese.

Gary texted Erwin to tell him to be sure that we go visit the interior of the United Protestant Church, also known as The Church of a Thousand Trees.  Gary knew I love photography, wanted to be sure I go there to get pictures, which I did.

The church is located at the corner of E. Eastwood Ave. and S. Denali St., is a historic chuch.  It was built when a colony was established in the Matanuska Valley. On April 11, 1937 the church was dedicated. It is a 2-story structure, built with logs.

The bronze statue of Balto, a sled dog hero back in 1925, is at the Visitor Center.  At that time, there was a diphtheria epidemic among children in Nome, and the hospital  was out of vaccine.  The fastest way to transport vaccine from Nenana, AK to Nome was by plane; however, the engine was frozen.  Balto was honored for moving vaccine to Nome. Balto died of natural causes at the age of 14.
"Yes, your hair smells nice"
Erwin was reading the plaque at that time
We picked up some food stuff at Fred Meyer Marketplace on our way back to Mountain View RV Park.
