July 29, 2014 (99th Day)

Good shower after two days of sponge bathing when dry camping.  Left campground at 8:45 am. There were still lots of dark clouds, but the sun was out. The temperature was 70.

We went by Youghall Beach and the park in Bathurst, New Brunswick (NB). Then to downtown and there was a road construction along the way.

We wanted to see the waterfall that is about few miles outside of the town and we tried to keep calm and followed the directions, but still could not find it.  Edith was disappointed because she was looking forward to taking pictures of falls.

On our way back to Bathhurst town Edith saw this beautiful red barn with yellow flowers in the front.  She must have taken hundred pictures of the barn.  After that we went back to to Bathurst downtown.  Strong winds were starting to pick up but no rain yet.

Now we were getting ready to go to Caraquet, NB.  In Grande-Anse we got gas fill-up and while in town we checked out a church that was built in 1868.  We went inside to see what the interior looked like and there were ladies decorating the church in preparation for National Acadian Day.  It is observed every year on the 15th of August to celebrate Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Acadians.

We went by Acadian Village Historique, looked around and changed minds about going in. The admission fee was way more than we were willing to pay.

Checked out Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage church off Route 11 before we arrived Carquat, NB

We were getting low on cheese curds that we picked up a couple days ago and there was this Fromagerie Les Blancs d'Arcade that sells cheese curds. Of course, we picked up a bag for $10 Canadian dollars and they tasted so so good.

It was almost time for the camper van to have oil change. There was an auto repair and maintenance shop in the town, but they told us they do not have proper equipment to work on such a big van like ours, suggested us to go elsewhere.

Now on way to Shippagan and Miscou Islands via 11 then left to 113 NB

We crossed the bridge to an island called ile Lameque, then right on Chaisson Road to Kite Park to see Old Portage Island Lighthouse. It was a long walk to get close to the lighthouse, so Edith used the zoom lens to get a close-up shot if it.  It seems to be a very popular site for kiteboarding because there were so many of them out there.  Of course, we stayed and watch them for a while.

We went back to 113, the turned right to 313.  There were hundreds and hundreds of wind turbines as we were traveling along.

Stopped by to take a peek inside Sainte Celica Church.

Saw another lighhthouse but we did not stop by

113 N to Miscou Island to see Miscou Lighthouse - the oldest lighthouse in operation in New Brunswick. It was built in 1856. Stormy clouds started to roll in.

Erwin walking along the shore. See him?

Before crossing the "big" bridge Edith wanted to check out the restaurant to have a look at lobster tanks, but it did not have any

Wind turbines in Lameque and wind turbines from 113

By the time we crossed the bridge to Shippagan it started to rain, but when we got to the aquarium to look for the lighthouse the rain had stopped.  It took us a while to figure out where the lighthouse was, found it right behind the aquarium.

Driftwood Acadien sculptures on 113 near Tracide-Sheila, NB, met the sculptor, Joel Ferguson who was born and raised here his whole life. He collects driftwood and build furniture and fun sculptures out of them.

Not far from Driftwood Acadien was an unusual blue heron sculpture near Tabusinic River in Tabusinic, not far from the lighthouse. We missed taking an entrance to the lighthouse, had to go past a quarter mile before we made an u-turn.  The door to the lighthouse was open so Edith walked in and asked if she could go up to the top.  "Sure, you may, but we will be closing in few minutes", the lady said. No admission fee was required, so Edith hurriedly hobbled back to the van and told Erwin to come with her . It took 44 steps to reach to the top and the view was very nice.

Few miles from the lighthouse we shopped for groceries at Freshmart in Neguac, NB.

Settled down for the night at HH Home Hardware parking lot.

  2. Thank you Sheila for your kind words, we enjoy traveling and writing the blog is one of our ways to help us remember the trip and to bring along those not able to travel to come along with us in their armchairs! Many of our friends do not like to travel for one reason or another but they like to hear about ours. Hugs, Erwin
