August 10, 2014 (111th Day)

Lots of sirrus clouds. It felt warm, but it was 64˚.  We decided not to eat breakfast here until we get to either one of two attractions we wanted to visit today.

We arrived Acadia National Park, then got on Park Loop Road to Cadillac Mountains. It is the highest point (1,530') on the East Coast of U.S. and offers magnificent views. There are deep scratches or gouges all over the granite.  Back in old days they had Green Mountain Cog Railway that took visitors to the hotel on the mountains. However, in 1895 the hotel was burned down and the cog train was sold and moved to New Hampshire.

There are some overlook points and one of them was Jordan Pond.

There were lots of cyclists going up/down. It was little hazy when we hiked to the top of Cadillac Mountains, but were rewarded with the magnificent view all around. Yes, it was very windy out there.

On way to Sand Beach area to visit Thunder Hole.  It is a great place to relax and enjoy the view and sound (if you can hear). Actually, the best time to come and watch/listen is when there is a storm coming or on a windy day.  It was a beautiful day when we were there, so the waves were not as rough. When there is a large sized wave coming into the cavern there will be a deep thunderous sound; hence the name. The splash can be as high as 40 feet!  It was during the incoming tide when we were there.  Back in 1978 when Edith visited it with her friends there were no steps leading to the Thunder Hole and now they have them to keep people safe. We stayed there for about 45 minutes and Erwin heard maybe two soft "growls" coming from the hole.

We continued our trek and arrived at Seawall Picnic area, not far from Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Very beautiful area to sit, watch and enjoy lunch.

From there we went to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. From the parking lot there is a trail leading to the spot where people can get a glimpse of the lighthouse. To get a somewhat better view of the lighthouse one had to climb down the rocks.  Edith likes to try anything challengeable, but she was too scared to climb down. She is afraid of rocks, pebbles and stones.  She felt her hiking shoes she had on were not enough to gain her confidence (She had 5 falls since the beginning of the trip).  She wanted so badly to take pictures of the lighthouses, so Erwin volunteered to do it for her.

Continued on 102A to Somersville, Maine (ME). The road was bumpy and rough most of the way.

At Great Long Pond there were lots of kayaks, canoes, Stand Up Paddles.

We left Acadia National Park during mid afternoon and wanted to get to Rockland, ME, so Edith can get a picture of the lighthouse. The town had a festival going on and some roads were blocked.  We missed the opportunity and continued trekking until we arrived South Thomaston, ME.  We were hungry and decided to park at Walmart, so Edith can fix supper.

After supper we drove down little further to find a good spot for taking pictures of the Super Moon. We went to three different spots, but not a great view.  It just happened that we got on Waterman Beach Road, saw lots of cars parked along the side of the road. There is an outdoor dining restaurant called Waterman's Beach Lobster.  Edith thought it was a perfect place, parked there. Edith set up the tripod and waited for the moon to come up. At this time she could not figure out exactly where the moonrise will be.  The moon rose at 7:29 pm, but Edith did not see it until 8 minutes later.  It rose behind an island!

After the photoshooting Erwin suggested that we go to the restaurant and asked if we could dry camp on their property. The manager approved it, so we stayed here all night long.
It was a very cool and quiet night.
