August 6, 2015 (107th Day)

The fog was heavy when we were up at 6:20 am. After breakfast we sorted through brochures, pamphlets collected from visitor's offices.  Some we kept for reference after we get back home.

Today is the day we meet Erwin's virtual buddy, Sheila. After texting back and forth it was agreed that we meet her and her partner, Keith at a restaurant in Saulnierville, Nova Scotia (NS) at 11 am. to beat the noon hour traffic. It was 8 am when we checked out of the campground and we had a couple hours to sight see along the way.

From Route 3 we turned off to Route 304 to see Cape Forchu Lighthouse in Yarmouth, NS. The lighthouse was built in 1840 and is the beacon to Canada. "Cape Forchu" means forked tongue of land because there are two prongs of land that jut into the sea like a serpent's tongue. The tower is closed, but the grounds is accessible.

This fogginess makes us glad we are not traveling by boat!

The fog was still heavy, but not as bad as it was early this morning.

We went to La Cuisine Robicheau Restaurant in Saulnierville, NS to meet Sheila and Keith for lunch.

Erwin's version: How did I know about them?  Well, I am a member of Lumberjocks.com which is a woodworking website for all kinds of woodworking, if it has anything to do with wood and wood tools, you will find it on that website. If you have a problem with something to do with wood, you ask a question on the website and someone will respond with an answer. Sheila is also a member as well as Keith and she is a pattern designer for scroll saw projects. I saw and liked some of her patterns and ordered some.  When my daughter stopped by for a visit a few years ago, I asked Sheila for a simple design for a project to do with my granddaughter. She sent me a simple bunny basket pattern as it was around Easter time. I had lots of fun doing this project with my granddaughter. We kept in touch through the website, commenting on each others' projects as well as other people's. So when we knew we were going to be in Nova Scotia, we made a point in stopping by to visit her and Keith. Keith also designs patterns for scroll sawing and does a wonderful job making hand crafted pens. His pens are among the finest I have ever seen!  It was well worth our time as they were very interesting and down to earth people! We exchanged a few gifts of our handiworks. I gave her 2 of my wood turned bowls and she gave us a set of ornaments that she designed and made and a print of a painting of Snow Leopards that she painted.  She is a lady with many talents! She has her website selling scroll saw patterns and tole painting supplies at sheilalandrydesigns.com

When we entered the restaurant the hostess asked us if we were supposed to meet somebody here. Yes, we replied and she led us to a room where Sheila and Keith were waiting.  It was as if we knew them before.  We were happy to finally meet them in person.  Per Sheila's suggestion Erwin decided to try Rappie Pie. A new experience for him to taste NS's famous and popular dish. Sheila and Keith had Rappie pie, also.

Erwin's dish: Rappie Pie with chicken
It is a traditional dish in Nova Scotia or Acadia.
Edith loved her shrimp dish. It was very meaty and tasty.

When we were done lunching Sheila and Keith asked us to follow them to their residence, so we followed them.  They have 3 beautiful cats: Coco, Pancakes & Richard.

We wanted to stay a bit longer, but we needed to be in Digby, NS before nightfall and to buy ferry boarding tickets for next morning. Sheila suggested that if we have time to go visit Bear River, NS.    We hope to see them again if and when we re-visit Nova Scotia.  We had an enjoyable time with them.  Sheila and Keith, thank you for your time to let us visit with you for few hours.

Across from the restaurant where we had lunch is Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) Church that was built in 1880.  It is remarkably well taken care of!

We visited another church in Church Point, NS. Eglise Sainte-Marie is a Catholic church and is supposedly to be one of the largest and tallest wooden buildings in North America. (wiki). The interior is very beautiful. There is a museum in the back of the church.

It looks like a castle?

We arrived just in time before Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse closed at 4 pm.. No admission fee, but donation is welcome.  The beach was very rocky.

Looking at how much time we have left before we need to be in Digby, NS to get ferry boarding tickets we decided we have enough time to swing by Bear River, NS (Sheila's recommendation).  We walked around a bit.

This store has some amazing arts and crafts in it!

On way to Digby, NS from Bear River, NS there were few Highland cattle in the field. Edith wished they were closer to the fence, so she could get good head shots of their faces.

Now at Digby Ferry terminal we reserved ferry boarding tickets to cross the bay to Saint Johns, New Brunswick at 8 am tomorrow morning. While at the ticket counter we asked if we could dry camp on the parking lot and they said we could and told us that the building is open 24 hours if we needed to use the bathrooms, Alas, no showers!

We needed to get snacks and drinks for tomorrow's crossing and went to Sobey's. On way back to the terminal we decided to have supper at Pizza Delight. The Pizza was very tasty!

While the evening was still bright we drove to see Point Prim Lighthouse. It was a long drive and it started to drizzle as we were getting there.  We did not get out of the car to walk up to see it.

Now back to the ferry terminal to dry camp overnight.

  1. We so enjoyed meeting the two of you! After talking to you both for so long, we felt as if we already knew each other! I will always cherish my two bowls from Erwin (and my coffee scoop which I use every day!) and I hope one day we get to come down to your neck of the woods to visit as well. xoxo
