June 19, 2017 - Skagway, AK to Whitehorse, YT

The day was beautiful when we got up.  After breakfast we got the Lil' Home prepped for our next destination to Whitehorse, Yukon. Yesterday we were informed  that our Sea Turtles group is to leave at 10:20 am this morning.
It was around 9:20 am when we were all ready, and Richard came over to let us know that our schedule was pushed back 20 minutes earlier. It was a good thing that we were 100% ready at that time.

We left Garden City RV Park at 10 am, got on South Klondike Highway toward Carcross, Yukon.  On the way we pulled over at the turnout to get a view of the mountains and the valley.

There were bicyclists going downhill toward Skagway, AK. I don't think I could do this, but maybe I would if I was much younger and more athletically inclined.
We arrived Canadian Customs border at 10:45 am.  While we were waiting for our turn at the gate it started to drizzle.  After answering few questions about fruits/vegetables and alcohol the agent gave us a go-ahead.

There was a black bear grazing in the bank next to the shoulder but two Jeeps were parked right on the highway. They should have moved over to the shoulder.  I managed to get only the top part of the bear before it went back in the forest.I cannot believe there were some ignorant tourists doing this! The shoulder is there for a reason to pull over for safety to avoid accidents.

There was a road construction, and we waited 10 minutes before we were led out by the pilot car.  We moved at 20 km (12 mph) for over 4 and half miles!  Two other groups, caught up with us.

We checked out Carcross Desert, an unusual desert area of sand dunes.  The sand (about 1 square mile or over 600 acres) was left behind by a large glacial lake a long time ago.

Next stop was lunch break at Caribou Crossing Trading Post. It has a museum, wildlife mounts, dog sled rides, bakery (famous for donuts). It was still drizzling when we walked about, so we did not get to visit every attraction there. The surface was too muddy to continue our walk.

A very large piece of Jade!

We swung by to see Emerald Lake, a lake in the southern Yukon.  It is known for its intense turquoise-green color of the lake.  The mountain ranges were beautiful.

We pulled into Pioneer RV Park in Whitehorse, Yukon at 3:15 pm.  We were directed to a campsite that is next to the wall.  We found out that the electricity was not working, so we had to move to a different campsite (much better).
First campsite that had non working electricity
A better campsite!

We went to Canadian Superstore to get stuff we needed to make supper and for next few days.  It was five years ago that our jaws dropped to the floor when we first walked in this superstore. It was HUGE!  But, this time they did not have much bulk items to choose from.

We were on land/cruise tour with Holland America five years ago when we flew from Vancouver, BC to Whitehorse, Yukon.  We remembered visiting some places in this town, so we decided to go out after supper.

The sky started to darken as we were on our way back to the campground.  We joined with our Sea Turtles members at the campfire for a chat.

All lined up!
