June 16, 2017 - Skagway, AK

This morning was very foggy and gloomy. Apparently it rained last night.

Today's attraction for the caravan: White Pass & Yukon Rail train ride. We rode with  Nancy and Brian to the parking lot in downtown Skagway.

The railroad began construction in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush as a means of reaching the goldfields. With its completion in 1900, it became the primary route to the interior of the Yukon, supplanting the Chilkoot Trail and other routes. The route continued operation until 1982, and in 1988 was partially revived as a heritage railway. (Source: Wiki)

We, the caravan members, met together at White Pass & Yukon Rail Train Depot on 2nd Avenue. After getting train tickets we were escorted to a private train car.  The ride took an hour and half each way.  The train went through two tunnels.  Even though it was foggy most of the way the views were so beautiful.  The train was a great way to see the beautiful scenery outside of Skagway.  The train made a stop at Summit Point (elevation 2,875').  If the train makes a stop at Fraser, BC all of us would need to bring passports with us, but because the train stopped in Alaska we were not required to bring passports.  If anyone of you plan to visit Skagway, AK be sure to book train tickets in advance.

Afterwards we had lunch with Nancy, Brian, Eileen and Richard at Skagway Fish Company near the cruise port. It was ranked #3 out of 23 restaurants in the town. I had shrimp basket and Erwin had Ivan's clam chowder soup and fried Halibut fish & chips. Our meals were very very good.
